The World Outside – working song titles and song lengths

As many of you may know, the new album is actively being worked on.  Rhythm guitars are currently being tracked and all is going well in the world.
Speaking of the world–and as stated in the liner notes of the previous album–the album title for the new Cea Serin will be The World Outside.  It’s an album title I’ve had in mind for quite some time and I’m eager to share it with everyone because I believe it’s the best thing material the band has to offer.  By that, I mean, this is going to be our Slaughter of the Soul or our Images and Words album.

So let’s talk about the song names and song lengths to get an inkling of what this batch will be about.

Whenever I write a song I have melody ideas for the lyrics but not specific lyrics at that time. I always wait for the entire album to be finished before I start writing the words and marrying myself to certain phrases.  By doing it this way, I can get a grip on the concepts of the whole record, any repeating themes, and have the whole instrumental mix available to digest before making the lyrics concrete.  The same goes for song titles.

When I write the tunes I have to save my projects under a file name (whether it’s on my computer or in my Kurzweil K2500S).  So I basically have to come up with something to call it.  These “working titles” don’t have anything to do with the actual subject matter of the song but instead offers a glimpse into the vibe of the song or some distinct characteristic about it.

That being said, here’s the track listing for the new album, or, how we refer to the songs between ourselves.

  1. Stab – 11:57
  2. Rose – 10:16
  3. Suffer – 12:36
  4. Alpha – 13:40
  5. Omega – 10:48
  6. Capo – 9:35

So there you have it.  We don’t exactly have a “single” on the record as every song is pretty long.  The only other things I want to add is that “Alpha” and “Omega” were meant to start the album off but “Stab” is way too strong of an opener; “Alpha” and “Omega” are also basically a part 1 and 2 of one song.  Other than that, track 2 will probably end up being called “Rose on the Ruin” but, again, that’s not set in stone.

  1. Great to hear things are progressing, and interesting to hear about the writing and song-naming process. Have loved both of your albums out so far, so I won’t expect anything different on this one. Keep up the great work!
