Is It Time for a Cea Serin Band Photo?

Cea Serin 1997

Since Cea Serin formed I have always been against having a band photo.  The above picture is what I’ve always used to represent the band.  But has the time come for Cea Serin to final embrace the promo element?

Back in 1997 there weren’t a lot of websites or webzines around that were supporting metal.  Sure, they existed and there were certainly enough magazines, but back then things were different.  You could get away with having one weird band photo for a webzine interview.

I always wanted Cea Serin to have a unique presence; however, I always hated band photos.  Metal promos were always the same thing:  a bunch of people standing in some field looking off in different directions (bonus points for leather jackets).  I never saw how a band photo could connect someone with how their music sounded.

The awful thing was that, for the most part, you could look at a band’s promo and immediately tell what genre they were in.  Black metal, power metal, hair metal, progressive metal – it all had a certain look.  The same goes for band logos.  Depending upon your genres you had to have a certain look to your band logo.

Well, I never wanted people to be able to easily pigeonhole us into a category before listening to us.

So I opted to get a banged up old couch and construct some mannequins to represent the band for our promo.   You can’t see it in the photo but each mannequin has qualities to them that stood for each member of the band.

But these days it’s very easy to come across pictures of Cea Serin.  If you know our names you can easily look us up on any social media site or search engine.  And that was kind of the point.  I wanted people to seek us out because when they looked us up online I wanted them to find out more about us.  In their search I wanted people to come across our interviews and reviews.

However, the downside of this is that whenever a band gets press there is a need to have some type of photographic representation for print purposes.  So, that being said, recently we’ve had ads running for the new CD with the album cover as the only accompanying photo.  This can be problematic.

Well, over at Generation Prog Records, they set us up with our first official/unofficial band photo.  And here it is:

Cea Serin

There you have it folks. That’s as good as it’s going to get for a while.
No, the band has never appeared together in the same room to pose.  These are all individual shots from different times.  But there you have it.  One pictures with the three current members.
